Pterodactylus fossils are best known from fossils found in the Solnhofen limestone of Bavaria, Germany. Fragmentary remains have been found in other parts of Europe as well as Africa, so their range would have included Europe and part of Africa.

The first Pterodactylus fossil discovered was found in the Solnhofen limestone in Bavaria, Germany during the 1700's. All well preserved Pterodactylus fossils found since then also come from the Solnhofen limestone, but a few more fragmentary remains have been found throughout Europe and in parts of Africa.
