The powertrain control module (PCM) is visible from the engine compartment. It is in the firewall on the passenger side. The rap module for your keyless entry should be in your jack storage compartment (at least it is on the 4 door)
In a 1998 Ford Explorer : The RAP module ( Remote Anti-theft Personality module ) is used with your anti-theft system and your keyless remotes ( each vehicle with keyless entry has it's own factory code )

I'm not a mechanic / technician but as far as I know if you change the RAP module ( remote antitheft personality module ) and the remotes then you would have a different FACTORY entrance code

In the storage compartment in the cargo area , on the drivers side , by the liftgate ( where the wheel jack is kept )
on a 97 its behind the passenger side kick panel
It is located behind the left rear interior quarter trim.
On a 1998 Ford Explorer : I believe the RAP module is inside the storage area where your tire jack is ( cargo area , drivers side , behind removable plastic panel )
If you have power locks and windows it is located behind the passengers airbag. Cheers
