It's basically GM's method of cheating on an emissions test. The secondary air pump adds ambient air to the exhaust in order to dilute what comes out the tailpipe. . . making it seem like it pollutes less than it does. Nice, huh?

It's purpose is to activate 2 control valves (1 on each bank) and an air injection pump to inject fresh, clean air into the exhaust stream, allowing for cleaner emissions. When the solonoid fails, exhaust returns into the pump, creating heat damage and destryoing the $175.00 pump. So I suggest you pay the $19 to $35.00 for the solonoid!!!
