Actually there are more than one shift solenoid; not sure how many on the 02 Expedition, but, probably 3 or 4. They are located on the valve body inside the transmission case. To access the valve body and shift solenoids, you must remove the transmission pan. Be careful here because the transmission pan will be full of Transmission Fluid. There is no drain plug on the Expedition transmission pan so the easiest way is to loosen all pan bolts just a little and then remove all bolts except on the front end of the pan. Allow the pan to slightly separate from the transmission housing on one rear corner and drain some of the transmission fluid out. Then support the pan and remove the rest of the bolts, being careful not to tilt the pan too much or you take a trans fluid bath. When the pan is removed, you'll see a filter which is attached to the valve body. Remove the filter and you will see the valve body with several shift solenoids attached to electrical connectors. Now you will have to determine which shift solenoid is bad. Excercise caution when removing the wiring harness from the shift solenoids because the wiring harness is easily damaged.
The shift solenoid, on your Ford expedition, is located on the top of the transmission. The shift solenoid can be accessed through the shifter counsel.
