Open the hood. Look behind the engine and down below the exhaust manifold on that side. You will see a cable going under a heat shield below the exhaust manifold. Remove this heat shield. The plastic thing the speedometer cable goes into (as does a two wire electrical connector) is the vehicle speed sensor.
It is very easy to replace (if you need to do so) because it is held in with just one bolt. If removing this sensor, be very careful not to kink the speedometer cable. If you kink the cable you will have a bouncy speedometer needle and annoying noise until the cable is replaced.
If you are getting ECM/PCM codes causing you to suspect a faulty VSS, before you do any more guesswork, first verify that you have stable battery voltage with the engine running after a steady 20 minutes of driving. If battery voltage fluctuates by more than 0.15V at idle or 0.11V at 2000 RPM, repair or replace the alternator.
