Bottom side of the engine. Look for something with a big wire and a couple of small wires attached to it. DON'T loosen anything until you take the negative lead off the battery.

disconnect the battery, then the wires from the starter. Then remove the bolts holding the starter to the engine.
The starter is located in fromt of the car on the bottom. Follow the red wire from the battery.
it is in the front of the engine follow the + wire from battery
Disconect the - battery cable Raise and support vehicle Disconnect wiring at the top of the starter Remove starter mounting bolts Remove starter
Remove the positive cable from your 1997 Oldsmobile battery. Remove the starter cables from the front of the starter. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new starter.
Front, lower drivers side of engine, between radiator and engine.
It's ontop the starter and has been for years and it's called the starter solenoid. You send 12 volts to it when you crank the car.
On my 1993 Oldsmobile 88, it is number "8"
