There were 2 motors in the escort that year. B Clear. near the flywheel, would be a good guess... look to where the transmission bell housing mates with the engine block on both the front and back of the engine you will find a motor with a positive battery cable connected to it. It's on the back of the engine under the intake manifold, so you have to reach up from underneath. Take off wires after disconnecting battery, then 3 bolts out of the bellhousing to drop it out.

Make sure the voltage from the ignition key wire to the solenoid is > 3 volts before replacing the starter. If a low voltage is coming into the solenoid then a new starter and solenoid will not fix the starting problem and the new solenoid could be damaged.
