The temperature sending unit is screewed into the drivers side head between the first 2 spark plugs up front.
If you follow the top radiator hose to the engine you will see where it clamps onto a housing that has 2 bolts holding it to the top of the intake. The thermostat is under that housing.
The 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme temperature sending unit can be found on the front of the engine. The temperature sending unit will be a few inches above the thermostat housing.
It is the two wire sensor near the thermostat housing.
The coolant temperature sensor is near the thermostat outlet at the front of the engine. You are facing the engine. It should be located to the right of the thermostat outlet. The sending unit on the left of the thermostat outlet, is the temperature gauge sending unit.

The sending unit for the temperature guage on a Ford 4.0 L OHV engine is in the intake manifold just to the left of the thermostat housing when you are standing at the front of the vehicle. The larger sending unit on the right is for the EEC system.
Coolant temperature sending unit is located on the front of the engine. The cooling temperature sending unit will be on the right hand side of the engine.

Thermostats range in temperature from 175-205 degrees. Choose a 195 degree thermostat and you'll be fine.
