on a 3.4L V6 it is located within the housing which is in the metal part where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. there are two bolts holding it in that are extremely hard to get to. you must remove the intake, throttle body, and exhaust heat shield just to get to it. i changed it myself and saved $400 in labor. (it took me 2 days)
The thermostat is located on a 2003 Oldsmobile Alero in the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is located on the rear side of the engine block.

The 2001 Oldsmobile water pump is located on the front of the engine. You can follow the top radiator hose directly to the water pump.
