There is a hose going to the top of the intake manifold, with a bulb-like connection. You just take off the two bolts/screws holding down the bulb-like connector, pull the connector off holding it up to keep the coolant in the hose, remove the old thermostate and replace with the new. The thermostat usually has it's own gasket so you don't need to buy a gasket or use sealant. It's recommended to lower the coolant level by draining some radiator coolant first, but if you have something handy to catch the coolant there shouldn't be too much loss of coolant without draining first. Just hold the hose up.
To change the thermostat on a 97 Chevy Tahoe, drain the radiator. Locate the part under the upper hose register and loosen the screw holding it in place. Replace it by putting in the new part and bolting it back down.

THE CRANK SENSOR ON A 97 5.7 IS LOCATED UNDER THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY BETWEEN THE PULLEY AND THE OILPAN. SLIGHTLY TO DRIVERS SIDE
They both use the 4L60E.
