The thermostat on a BMW 525I is located into the water pomp in the thermostat housing.
usually in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
removing the thermostat on a 1997 BMW 528i series will be simple. First the fan will need to be taken off, then the cowl covering will need to be removed. After these parts are removed, the thermostat is in plain view. The hoses on the thermostat do not need to be removed on this car. The thermostat will removed by taking the two bolts off.

The Z3 97 has a thermo housing, its right in front of he fan and if you change it you need to drain the anti-freeze and when you r done replace it with BMW Antifreeze, add 50 water...cost 20.00.. ..thermostat 35.00 total 55.00
on most inline BMW engines, the thermostat housing in located on the front of the engine, drivers side, in front of the intake manifold, between the airbox and fan. there are coolant hoses going in the bottom and the side.
