On 2001-2002 Explorers there is no dipstick. With engine running & transmission warm & reasonable level you must access the drain plug seal under the transmission. You will find a large nut(drain plug) & within it is a 3/8" Allen plug. Holding the large nut w/a wrench unscrew the Allen plug and if a small dribble comes out your full. Replace plug & your set.
This Ford's idea of a "sealed unit."
Actually , starting with the 2002 ( 4 door ) Ford Explorer , there is no automatic transmission fluid dipstick

Actually , it doesn't have one ( since 2002 on the 4 door Explorer )
I believe that is Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid , pull your transmission dip stick out and confirm with printing on dip stick
The 2002 and newer Ford Explorer 4 door models do not have an automatic transmission dipstick
There is no dipstick for the manual transmission , the fluid level is checked at the fill plug on the transmission ( underneath the Explorer )
No
Use a funnel and add it through the transmission dip stick tube, a very little at a time.
The automatic transmission fluid dipstick should be near the firewall , in the engine compartment , just on the right side ( passenger side ) of the engine The manual transmission does not have a dipstick , the fluid level is checked underneath the 1993 Ford Explorer at the fill plug on the transmission
Is this in the automatic transmission fluid pan . What I have read from another contributor is that it is the plug put in the transmission by the factory that is pushed in when the dip stick tube is installed .
No , starting with the 2002 model Ford Explorer ( 4 door ) there is no dipstick for the automatic transmission
