If automatic usually inside the transmission pan
Take the trans pan off and there it is.
It's located in the oil pan on the timing belt side of the engine - at the bottom of the block.

Raise and support the front of the car. Remove the crossmember and downpipe. There is a cover for the transmission - remove that too. Remove all the 10mm bolts around the oil pan. Pull the oil pan off. Replace. Don't forget to drain the oil first!
