At the back of the engine, looks like a distributor!
on the side if the tranny. its called the PRNDL switch. look for cig pack size black plastic and cable, bingo. that be it.
if you disconnect the o2 sensor cable in the air intake then start the engine you would see the check engine sign turned on in the gauge panel. It is on then the sensor is working if off the the sensor may have problems

there isn't one ( 96 it start that year) you only have a cam sensor in the base of the distributor.
ON the SOHC models the Crankshaft position sensor is located on the front of the oil pan, The DOHC is located behind the engine, the transmission and the flywheel must be removed to the sensor on the DOHC models
My 94 sidekick did the sme thing. I found the heat sensor, located in the front of the engine near the thermostat, had a loose connection. It is riveted on and just needs to be tightened.

try replacing the crankshaft position sensor
Locate the camshaft sensor in your car. Disconnect the electrical plug on the sensor. Remove the bolt that holds it in place. Twist the the sensor to remove it and place in the new one.
On most vehicles, a bad o2 will cause the chech engine light to come on, decrease in fuel mileage, and varioius runing problems including: surging, running rough, stumbling.....
