On a 1996 Ford Mustang : Two of the places that you will find the VIN are : Open the drivers door , and on the end of the door ( or the latch pillar ) will be an information sticker that will include the VIN If you look through the front windshield from OUTSIDE , at the bottom of the windshield , on the drivers side , on top off the dash will be a metal plate that has the VIN

The hidden areas for the VIN are on the drivers side door and also on the radiator on the left side in the front.
VIN numbers did not start until the 50's.

the dealer should be able to cut a new key using the vin number
i think the engine is signed by the people who built it you could run the vin number with carfax...or you could even call up ford and tell them the vin number and i am pretty sure they could tell you.
