If the motor is the 2.4L it will be on the back side of the motor, right below the exhaust manifold. It's a job to do. If its a 2.4 the water pump is in the rear of the motor. You must remove the exhaust manifold to access the water pump. Then you must remove the timing chain cover. When you remove the timing chain cover you must remove the timing chain tensioner. Its quite a big job.

A 1996 Pontiac Sunfire uses Dexcool coolant. This should only be mixed with distilled water, never tap water. Replace the coolant every 2 years or as needed.

A lack of water in your cooling system will cause your 2002 Pontiac Sunfire to overheat. A malfunctioning thermostat can also cause it to overheat.

how do I replace water pump 2000 Pontiac Grand AM SE1?

User Avatar

To change the thermostat on a sunfire, look for the largest hose going into the water pump.Should be to the left as you look down at your fan. There should be a clamp holding the hose on. Remove the hose and look in the hole that the hose was pulled out of. It will be seated right there. If you need a pic. I have a manual and I can email it to anyone . My email is: jaybird@supercity.ca

The water pump is located on the passenger's side of the vehicle near where the engine belt is located (on a 3.3L engine). It seems to be a little difficult to get to. Have always had someone else replace my water pump don't know how difficult it is to replace.

User Avatar

generally, if you know that the pump is bad or failing, replace it. Repairing it is rarely an option. That's why there's a core charge on them. They are returned for factory refurbishment.

The cam shaft sensor is located behind the water pump pulley. One bolt that holds it in place.

Answerwater pump for a 98 sunfire is located with the timing belt can be a job. have to remove front of motor. enj. mount ect. More: Unless the 98 is much different from my 96, the water pump has nothing to do with the timing belt. Also, there is no need to remove an engine mount bolt. You should be able to loosen the belt tensioner enough to get the belt on and off the pump pulley.

it's in the belt path and has sort of a snout behind the pulley. It's back near the tensioner.

Bad trunk lid gasket. The gasket may have come loose or got cut.

The red water symbol is an indication that the water is overheating. The red battery symbol is a indication the charging system is not working.

AnswerWell, my car is a 97 Pontiac Sunfire, but I've heard it's about the same. Right now, I have to replace the water pump in MY car. My first indication was it continually was losing coolant and the light indicating low coolant levels kept popping on, no matter how much I added. I took it in and had it tested, and they told me it was the water pump.Usually a water pump on any car will start screaming just before the bearings give out totally. Used to be that you could regularly lubricate a water pump through a little lubricant hole, but I doubt you can do that on modern ones.------Another way of telling is if the weep hole on the water pump is leaking fluid.look at peep ho;e pn water [ump.if theres a discharge, replace it, seal weht bad
