Putting coolant in your 1997 Chevy Lumina is the same common way of putting coolant in most of today's vehicle. Make sure the engine is off and is cool. If you have an empty cooling system or if you just need to top off the coolant, follow these steps: Step 1. Locate the radiator cap. Step 2. Remove the radiator cap while the engine is cool. Do no remove the cap when engine is hot. Step 3. Fill the coolant overfill tank to the indicated "engine cold line". Step 4. With the engine cold, start the engine. Step 5. With the engine running and using a funnel if needed, fill the radiator until it reaches the lined brim of the radiator's spout. Be careful not to overfill it. The coolant will sink a couple of times because it will be constantly running coolant through the engine. There will also be air bubbles which indicates that there is air in the cooling system. Air in the cooling system must exit the cooling system in order for the coolant to have an effect. Step 6. Once there are no more air bubbles and the radiator is filled and can be filled no more, reinstall the radiator cap and make sure that it is sealed. Check the overfill reservoir to make sure that it is not overfilled. Always exercise good maintenance habits when dealing with your vehicle's maintenance.
