In the Soviet Union it was banned because it drew very close parallels to the communist revolution (note the character of Napolean and the striking resemblences to Stalin.)

The book actually had to go to 4 publishing houses before it was accepted by Secking and Warburg in England on August 17, 1945, and then the introduction was banned.

It was also challenged numerous times, once by the John Birch Society in Wisconsin (1963). Several others not included.
This was mostly because it portrayed the USSR very badly, therfore the Allied forces thought that the text was considered to be too controversial to print during wartime.

The book Animal Farm was never banned in the United States but has been banned by some states in the United States at times. In 1963, the state of Wisconsin banned the book and it has been banned in other countries such as Kenya in 1991.

When Animal Farm was published, the meat-packing industry had much sway in politics. The industry was slandered in the book and worked to have it banned in as many places as possible, although, when it was revealed that the industry was killing workers in unsafe conditions, the book was more widely accepted by the nation.

The above is false; it was banned because it was criticizing and satirizing the government of the United Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).
