Columbus was born and grew up - according to all available sources and his own writings - in the Republic of Genoa, Italy. His adult life and undertakings were mostly linked to Portugal: before he started considering a westward route to the Indies, he had already become a succesful and widely travelled captain on Portuguese ships. His wife (who he later abandoned) was a Portuguese noblewoman called Filipa Moniz Perestrelo. He also and repeatedly tried to get financial backing for his westward journey from the Portuguese King; unsuccesfully however, since the King's geographers quickly discovered that Columbus' calculation of the location of India and China was off by thousands of miles. The theory that he was anything else or was born anywhere else has no basis in historical study and documentation.

Sorry, wrong.
This is an historical mistake, for some time now known to be wrong. The Genoese plebeian weaverer Cristoforo Colombo was not a noble, therefore he would never have had access to the royal court of Portugal on the 15th Century, as the discoverer of America did. This was impossible, then. He existed, but never discovered America. Those are two different persons.
The Navigator known as Christopher Columbus was a Portuguese Nobleman who changed his name to Cristofõm Colon around 1488 to mislead the Spanish Catholic Kings into sailing away from the treasures of India (hence discovering the New World, now known as America), in coordination with the Portuguese King John The Second (João II).
Furthermore, the 477 descendents of the Genoese Cristoforo Colombo who where found in the last decades were, all of them, tested in the University of Granada and the DNA tests (all 477 of them) showed they were no relatives of the discoverer of America, the Admiral of the Ocean Sea.

Spain. He was Spanish and not Italian. His ship log and diary are all in Spanish and his wife was a Spanish nobility. Historians now believe he took on the persona of a poor Italian sailor to get support from the Spanish crown. His family was political rivals of the king and Queen and he knew that they would never help him, so he changed who he was. The theory actually makes sense when you look at the different evidence that is available to historians.
