Emile Berliner was born in Hanover, Germany, on 20 May 1851. In 1870 he moved to the United States and subsequently lived in Washington, DC, and in Boston, Massachusetts. He is best known for developing the phonograph (gramaphone) that used flat discs to preserve the recorded sound.
