Ancient Greek people made flat bread and put herbs and cheese on it. This was the first thing that was close to Pizza. They did not put tomato sauce on it.
The kind of Pizza we often eat today was first made in Italy as a Neapolitan pie with tomato.
It was not until 1889 that someone decided to add cheese to that.
Originally, the idea for pizza came from Italy from a Pita, or flatbread. The Pita was placed with various toppings. Pitas were common around the poor of Naples, Italy. Eventually they placed tomato sauce on the Pitas and created Italian pizza. The traditional pizza was usually oregano, virgin olive oil, tomato sauce and basil. The American pizza we see today came from Italian immigrants using American ingredients for their pitas. Pitas evolved into Pizza and Italians sold it to Americans. In World War II, soldiers in the Italian campaign enjoyed the dish and grew a fondness back home. Today, many toppings are placed, on the pizza.
