It started in Germany with Martin Luther and in England with people like William Tyndale. Basically, it started where ever those who started to draw away and reform from the Roman Catholic church.
In the sixteenth century a movement began to reform the Catholic chruch, which had become too authority and innerecuminically vile. As a result, those protesting the church and desiring it to reform, broke away into what was/is called protestant bodies, forming other churches and this are like Lutheran, etc.etc. So it was that most every denomination that was not catholic was called protestant.
Protestantism began with the "Protestant Reformation," led by Martin Luther. Luther and others were critical of certain doctrines and what they believed to be corruption within the Catholic church. The Reformation was sparked on October 31, 1517, in Wittenberg, Germany, when Luther nailed his "Ninety-Five Theses on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences" on the door of All Saints' Church. The Ninety-Five Theses criticized the Church and the Pope, focusing heavily on the Churches practice of selling indulgences and its teachings of purgatory. Luther's Ninety-Five Theses spread quickly throughout Germany and gained a huge following. The three fundamental principals of Protestantism and the Protestant Reformation are the supremacy of The Bible as the sole source of infallible authority; justification by faith alone, and not by works; and the universal priesthood of all believers.
