The USS Charles S. Sperry (DD 697) was a Sumner Class Destroyer in the US Navy and was in service from 5/17/1944 to 12/15/1973 when she was decommissioned. The ship was sold to the country of Chile in January of 1974 and renamed the "Ministro Zenteno". Chile scrapped the ship in 1990.
The ship was never "shot down". Planes are "shot down", ships are sunk. The USS Charles S. Sperry never sustained anything more than minor damage during it's service in WWII and Korea.
The most famous is the USS Maine (ACR-1) that was sunk near Havana; its captain at the time was Captain Charles Sigsbee.
