Paul Cornu, 1907, France.
Well, we go back to about 400BC for a Chinese toy made of bamboo that demonstrated the principle.
Forward a few centuries to 1870 and Alphonse Penaud developed such a single-axis toy powered by a rubber band. It seems that one of these toys given to two brothers Wright propelled them to an interest in flight.

But it is not until the 1930s that Focke-wulfe FW 61 was demonstrated.

But Igor Sikorsky in 1942 produced over 100 of what would be recognized today as a standard helicopter, with importantly, a tail rotor to counteract the torque applied to the body by the main blades.

But to fill out the picture, the autogyro a.k.a. gyrocopter enters the scene about 1923, with successful flights.

It must be noted that the most recent announcements re helicopters (October 2010) and their improvements in speed, once again hail somewhat to the gyrocopter! They have stubby wings and a main forward thrust prop, with a separate set of blades for lift.
