The Seven Days was a series of battles fought just east of Richmond, Virginia, the Confederate capital. When the battles began the Yankees were so close to Richmond they were setting their watches by the church bells in town, which were plainly audible. General Robert E. Lee had just been put in command of the Rebel army a few weeks before when the previous commander was wounded. Lee drove the Union forces away from the capital in the Seven Days. There was a battle every day but one, and each evening the Yankees would withdraw farther. Finally the Yankees were forced to take shelter by going into camp on the banks of the James River, under the protection of the large guns of the US Navy's ships on the River. Lee was dissatisfied, as he had hoped to completely destroy the Union army.
