The truth is people didn't know where the shots came from at first.
However I remember reading people at the parade that day thought the shots came from separate locations.
1. After the assassination most people thought the shots came from the freeway overpass
2. Abraham Zapruder, the man who filmed the assassination, claimed to hear shots behind him coming from the infamous grassy knoll
3. And some people claimed the shots came from the book depository where Lee Harvey Oswald was claimed to have shot from.

'The Three Tramps' were 3 well dressed men found squatting in a boxcar west of the grassy knoll. They were detained by police minutes after the assassination but were mysteriously released. Photos of the men were taken as they exited the police station and it has been speculated that one fo the men was Charles Harrelson (actor Woody Harrelson's father) who was an active assassin during the 60's and early 70's. And later in life while imprisoned had claimed he assassinated JFK but didn't give any specifics.
