Freeview and Freesat are the terrestrial and satellite standards in the UK for free to air digital broadcasts. During 2010, almost all analogue transmitters are being turned off leaving the digital transmissions the only way to receive television. Therefore, any television sold in the UK will have one or both tuners built in.

The components required for the tuners amount to a few pennies. The engineering work involved in removing them from production runs costs considerably more and will result in a more expensive television that has less functionality.

The displays that do not have tuners built in are generally called monitors rather than televisions. Many Computer Monitors also feature video inputs but if the prices are compared, most computer monitors will be more expensive than a similar size of television.

There are still a number of low cost televisions around in the UK. Own brand models in supermarkets are very competitive. Although brands such as Technica sold by Tesco are not the same quality as Sony, Panasonic and other premium names, they represent good value for money and will be among the cheapest televisions available.

Can your full HDTV receive freeviewhd?

Freeview is the free terrestrial digital television service in the UK. 2010 is the year that it will introduce HD broadcasts. Most UK televisions sold since 2008 have a freeview tuner built in but it is only televisions sold from 2010 onwards that are likely to have an HD freeview tuner built in. The manual for the television will tell you whether it has an HD tuner. If it doesn't, it is still possible to get HD broadcasts on Freeview by purchasing an HD set top box.

What is a freeview tuner?

Freeview is the British digital terrestrial broadcasting platform and was originally introduced by On Digital in the early 90s. On Digital ceased trading after only a few years and the service was then supported by BBC and others with a change of name to Freeview at the same time. On Digital was a subscription service but the change of operator brought free digital viewing using standard analog aerials. A Freeview tuner is the digital tuner to receive the broadcasts. It started as a set top box but most televisions on sale in the UK now have integrated digital tuners, removing the need for stand alone tuners. Set top receivers are still commonly available to support analog televisions without digital receivers. Prices are as low as £15 ($23)for a tuner, rising to £100 or so ($150) for more advanced models with built in recorders. At the time of this answer (2009), analog television is still widely available throughout the UK but the analog transmitter switch off has begun. By 2012, all analog television broadcast will cease and every viewer will need either a digital television or a set top box to receive terrestrial broadcasts. Freeview is only broadcasting in standard definition. Alternatives to terrestrial television are cable services, currently offered by Virgin Media throughout many cities in the UK and by BSkyB, the satellite service that covers the whole of the British Isles. Both are subscription services. Recently introduced is a further satellite service called Freesat. As its name implies, this provides free reception and the viewer needs to purchase and install a satellite dish and a receiver to benefit from it. Both satellite services and the cable service offer a mix of standard definition and high definition broadcasts.

Will a dutch tv work in the UK?

A Dutch television uses the same video system and the same power supply as a UK model. The tuner may operate at different frequencies to the UK digital broadcast bands so it might need a separate Freeview receiver to receive terrestrial television. Sky or Virgin receivers will work without problems.

The television has only an aerial connection can you still get freeview?

Freeview is the digital terrestrial television service for the UK. It is replacing analog services which will be switched off by 2012. To receive Freeview, either a television with a digital receiver is needed (most telvisions sold from 2008 have a digital tuner) or a separate Freeview receiver is needed. Most Freeview receivers have video and audio outputs which connect to AV inputs on the television. If a television has no AV inputs at all, then a Freeview receiver that outputs the decoded signal on the RF connector will be needed. Not all digital receivers have this function so it is important to check before buying. Before buying, ask the question "Does this receiver output its decoded signal as an analog RF signal?" It is not unknown for a salesman to say yes even if they don't know the answer. Remember that if you have asked the question and explained that it is vital to have the facility, you are entitled to a full refund if it turns out not to be the case. Better still, ask to study the manual before parting with cash.
