I remember some years ago a film about Laurel and Hardy. It wasn't a documentary, it had two actors playing the parts of L&H on and off screen. It was brilliant. I think it was made for TV and was shown here in the UK. Unfortunately, I can't remember the exact title!
Starting with Duck Soup, Slipping Wives, Love 'Em and Weep, Why Girls Love Sailors, With Love and Hisses, Sugar Daddies, Sailors Beware, Now I'll Tell One, The Second 100 Years, Call of the Cuckoo, Hats Off, Do Detectives Think?, Putting Pants on Phillip and The Battle of the Century. Oliver was in 9 others in 1927 and Stan had a couple more that year.

As far as I know, the top three are as follows: Mickey Rooney as Andy Hardy (16 times), Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond films (14 films plus a 1967 TV special), and Johnny Weismuller as Tarzan (12 films). According to Wikipedia Desmond Llewelyn played Q in 17 James Bond Films (Quiz Right) Well, if you include foreign films/actors, Shintaro Katsu played the character Zatoichi for twenty years. He started with 18 feature films, then a 24 episode television series, then reprised the role in 3(?) more films to include the cross over films Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo and Zatoichi Meets the One Armed Swordsman.
