Niagara falls are massive waterfalls on the Niagara River. They are the second largest falls in the world, and are renowned for their great beauty. They straddle the border separating the Canadian province of Ontario and the US state of New York. Currently, some 20-30 million tourists a year visit the Falls. The oldest and best known tourist attraction at Niagara Falls is the Maid of the Mist boat cruise, which has been in operation since 1846, carrying passengers into the whirlpools beneath the Falls. Niagara Falls is composed of two major sections parted by Goat Island: Horseshoe Falls (Canadian side) and American Falls (US side). The smaller Bridal Veil Falls also is located on the American side, separated from the main falls by Luna Island.

Niagara Falls State Park is open year round for viewing the Falls, and even with Canada's icy winters, the water does not freeze.

The American Falls reach a Height of 180 ft (56 m) and a Width of 1060 ft (320 m) while the Horseshoe Falls reach a Height of 170 ft (54m) and a Width of 2200 ft (675m) these falls compose 90% of the entire volume of the Niagra Falls.

The volume of water approaching the falls may sometimes be as much as 202,000 cubic feet (5,700 m3) per seconda, and is used as a valuable source of hydroelectric power.
