Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie sent a young George Washington to establish a fort in the Ohio territory. Washington was appointed as a lieutenant colonel and was given the task of leading a small militia force to build and defend the fort against French encroachment. This ultimately led to the outbreak of the French and Indian War in 1754.
Fort Astoria was renamed Fort George in 1846 after the United States and Great Britain settled the Oregon boundary dispute. The name change was part of a broader effort to assert American claims over the territory, as the fort was originally established by American traders. The renaming also honored King George III, reflecting the historical ties and context of the time. The fort eventually became a key site for American expansion in the Pacific Northwest.
