Well, Cybele is the "Earth Mother" figure of many ancient mythologies, mostly the Trojans, Greeks, and Romans. Supposedly she was born on Mount Ida, which I believe was supposed to be somewhere in Anatolia. In the Aeneid she's referred to as the "Phrygian Mother" or "Mountain Mother" and the wood of Aeneas' ships was harvested from her sacred groves. Mounts Dindymon and Sipylus are sacred to her, as well.
Some think this day emerged from a custom of mother worship in ancient Greece, which kept a festival to Cybele, a great mother of Greek gods.
