The only war in history fought between aircraft carriers was WWII.
Aircraft carriers (aircraft).
Yes indeed; Skyhawks played key roles in the Vietnam War, the Yom Kippur War, and the Falklands War. They were a superb low level strike aircraft and have used by many air forces around the world. In Vietnam they were used from US Navy carriers.
From WWII to Vietnam, they were very dangerous. In Vietnam, the USS Enterprise, USS Oriskany, and USS Forrestall, all were involved with explosions and fires destroying men and jet aircraft. Lessons LEARNED from those incidents have made aircraft carriers safer for 21st century US sailors.

In WWII they replaced battleships, becoming the new ruler of the seas. One carrier could sink two or more battleships. After WWII, carriers became portable airfields, providing close air support for troops on the ground. During the Vietnam War, carriers conducted air strikes at strategic targets in North Vietnam as part of Operation Rolling Thunder.
There were two wars: The air war over North Vietnam and the ground war in South Vietnam. The US Air Force and US Navy (aircraft carriers) fought the war in the North. The US Army and Marine Corps fought the war in the South. USMC jets supported their marines in the south. The US Army and US Marine aviation units, for the most part, stayed out of North Vietnam.
Some flew some by ship as cargo or on aircraft carriers
Even if you exclude the smaller aircraft carriers in World War 2, there were still many more than 5 or 6. The US Navy commissioned 23 aircraft carriers of the Essex class during the war, not to mention others in US service, and those used by the British and Japanese navies.
