The Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution gave suffrage to former black slaves on July 9. 1868. This was a bone of contention for southern states who were forced to ratify it in order to regain their representation in Congress.

Amendments 13, 14, and 15 were passed following the Civil War. Amendment 13 ended slavery, Amendment 14 provided rights to former slaves, and Amendment 15 expanded voting rights to people regardless of color, former servitude, and race.

However, the 15th amendment made it so that voting could not be denied to people, based on their race, color, or previous condition of servitude. Also, the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote. In addition, the 26th amendment states that the voting age be changed to 18, instead of 21.
