The Proposed Equal Rights Amendment
19th. Amendmentto the U.S. Constitution ---- The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
The 15th Amendment to the US Constitution gave black men the right to vote with the words, "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." The Amendment was ratified February 3, 1870. Note the words "right of citizens", yet women (black, white, or other) did not get the right to vote until the 19th Amendment was ratified August 18, 1920.
The wording of the amendment - 'The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude' - clearly excluded women the right to vote. Women had to wait another 50 years with the passage of the 19th amendment in 1920 and neither Elizabeth Cady Stanton nor Susan B. Anthony lived to see that day.

The 26th Amendment extended the vote to 18-year-olds. "The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age."

The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was structured to guarantee women the right to vote. It stated that the right to vote shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex. This amendment was ratified in 1920.
The Proposed Equal Rights Amendment
The fifteenth amendment to the United States constitution, ratified in 1870, reads, "The rights of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude." This essentially gave citizens other than white people to vote, including former black slaves, for which the amendment was primarily targeted to.The nineteenth amendment to the United States constitution, ratified in 1920, reads, "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." This gave both men and women the right to vote, as before 1920, only males had suffrage.
