Current research indicates the most likely source of HIV in humans was the mutation and subsequent propagation of a SIV (simian immunodeficiency virus) in central Africa. It is thought SIV mutated into a proto-HIV several times over the early 1900s, but the infection died out in each time until it was transmitted to urban areas and then to the United States where it suddenly exploded into an epidemic.
