It totally dependes on the person. I know of people who love each of those. I think Prozac is great for OCD and GAD (generalized anxiety). One will not be better than the other, just better for you and your needs.

What happens when you mix Prozac and alcohol?

It's not so much a matter of reaction as it is efficacy. Alcohol is a depressant and Prozac is an antidepressant. Excessive alcohol use/abuse counteracts the antidepressant effects of Prozac. Basically, it will not work as well, if at all. Also, when there is a reaction, individuals who are on Prozac and use alcohol can experience intoxication more easily and readily. As a result, poor impulsivity and judgment can occur.

Will Cymbalta curb your appetite?

On average, 8% of the patients in trials reported appetite reduction when taking Cymbalta (duloxetine hydrochloride) Delayed-release Capsules) for its recommended purposes. Cymbalta is a powerful drug that acts on the central nervous system. It would not be indicated for appetite reduction, and if one feels the need for such help there are far better and more effective choices. Speak to your doctor about planning an effective weight reduction program based on healthy principles.

What type of drugs are used to relieve depression?

The vast majority of drugs used to treat depression are in the SSRI and SNRI antidepressant classes (with some TCAs - tricyclic antidepressants) prescribed, as well. Very few MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) are prescribed anymore. SSRIs are specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors (allowing your own body's serotonin to be utilized more efficiently), and include Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil, Zoloft, and Prozac (with Prozac having been the first SSRI marketed - in 1987). SNRIs are serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (Effexor, Cymbalta, Pristiq)

What antidepressant is prescribed more than others for fibromyalgia?

There are two antidepressants commonly used to treat Fibromyalgia, they are Savalla and Cymbalta. Both Savella and Cymbalta are serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRI), similar to many other antidepressants; however, it is not considered an antidepressant, and is approved for the treatment of Fibromyalgia. Cymbalta, however, is used to treat not only Fibromyalgia but also depression, anxiety, and diabetic peripheral neuropathy. A doctor may prescribe either of these for Fibromyalgia. As with any medication, different people react differently so one may work better for a particular person than another. It is important to understand that doctors do not prescribe these medications to Fibromyalgia patients to treat depression, but rather because they have been proven to decrease the joint and muscle pains associated with Fibromyalgia.

Will you lose weight from taking Cymbalta?

Any antidepressant can make you gain weight. but only a certain percentage of people will gain weight on an antidepressant. Cymbalta is not one of the worst, Paxil and Remeron would be. It is thought that a long term weight gain of a couple of pounds typically, like 1-2% of your body weight (2-5 pounds) can be expected, but benefits generally greatly outweigh the risks, and that more people DON'T gain weight while taking an antidepressant than the other way around. On the other hand, some psychiatrists tell their patients that weight gain is an expected side effect of antidepressants due to changes their metabolism, and that weight gain is experienced by most of her patients. Personal experience: I have gained weight on all of the antidepressants I have tried (and there have been many). My internal medicine doctor told me that weight gain is expected on antidepressant drugs, including Cymbalta. It is true that some people don't gain weight but they are in the minority. For the majority of those who do gain weight, it isn't 1-2% of your body weight, but significantly higher. I have never gained less than 20 pounds despite maintaining a diet of around 1000 calories a day and exercising 5-6 times a week. Of course, if you are in the abyss it is worth the weight gain, but, know what you are getting yourself into.
