That's a matter of opinion but I suggest:

The Authorised Bible

The Iliad Homer

Don Quixote Cervantes

Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen

Animal Farm George Orwell

1984 George Orwell

The Trial Franz Kafka

The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck

Ulysses James Joyce

Catch-22 Joseph Heller

The Bible should not be on this list, as it is a collection of books and is never read in the same way "books" are read. Likewise, other religious books. I would visit: http://www.randomhouse.com/modernlibrary/100bestnovels.HTML. There are certainly fabulous books in other languages that don't translate well into English.

Answer

My thought is that the best books are those that are read by many people. They give us pictures and vicarious experiences of time and place. My favorites of serious books at this moment are a Thousand Splendid Suns, The Life of Pi, A Time to Kill (John Grisham's first novel), Time Was Soft There: A Paris Sojourn at Shakespeare & Co., A Single Pebble (John Hersey), The Once and Future King (T.H. White), The Opposite of Fate (Amy Tan), the Kapillan of Malta (Nicholas Monsarrat) and the Middle Kingdom (Andrea Barrett), Look Homeward Angel (difficult read, though). I am so glad that there are such gifted writers out there who spend their time crafting these stories.
