HDTV is not really a tv technology. Today pretty much all TVs are HDTV. I think what you are asking is maybe plasma vs. LCD (or LED.... very similar). The quick and simple answer is LCD.......... I have worked in the industry for over a decade and what the majority of people buy is not the best...
You have to make sure you get the correct size for your LCD HDTV first of all, since the LCD HDTV will be more of a rectangle shape than your other TV. The main thing you want to focus on when purchasing an HDTV is the resolution. The higher the resolution, the better your HD picture will be.

It's worth buying a high quality LED LCD 1080 P HDTV. I personalty don't see the value of buying a 1080i HDTV and feel that since HDTVs will last for years the LED LCD HDTV in 1080P is the best choice in spite of the higher cost. It may become worth buying a HDTV 3D, but currently they do not have enough 3D material and prices will drop

you are comparing apples to oranges. HDTV is an umbrella which LCD falls under. Plasma is also under that umbrella. LCD is a type of HDTV
The difference between led hdtv and lcd hdtv is that the led uses led lighting instead of lcd lighting that's used in computers and cell phones. the lcd hdtv is the oldest model and the led is the newest. With the led the picture is clearer.

The LCD offers a more clearer contract rather then a plasma since the plasma has more a of smear look with the HDTV that is added to the TV, however they are both are pretty compareable when it comes to the HDTV added to the TV.
