The reverse (back) bears an image of the sailing ship "Dromedaris" (one of the five ships that came with Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 when he established the Cape Town, the first permanent European settlement in South Africa, for the Dutch) with the denomination ("PENNY") below, the date ("1920") above, "SOUTH AFRICA" to the left and "ZUID AFRIKA" (Afrikaans for "South Africa") to the right. There were 386,000 such coins produced in 1928.
According to the Standard Catalog of World Coins, an example is worth US$3 in Fine condition, US$10 in Very Fine condition, US$40 in Extremely Fine condition, and US$90 in Uncirculated condition.
