A terrorist, after killing three security guards had entered the Indian embassy in Kabul to kill any survivours. He started firing his Kalshnikov and throwing hand grenades. Major Jyotin Singh, in the face of enemy fire charged at the terrorist with bare hands and pinned him down. The terrorist in a desperate move blew himself up..And this young valiant warrior bacame a martyr.
For his act of exemplary courage in the face of danger, this year, the highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashok Chakra, is being given to the brave army doctor, who lost his life in the Kabul embassy attack earlier this year. Major Laishram Jyotin Singh is the first doctor to be honoured with this award.

The gallant son of India selflessly laid down his life in the prime of his youth in the highest traditions of the Indian Army while serving in the most operationally committed Northern Command, in a fierce encounter in Chinkipora in Sopore District on 23 Feb this year upholding the highest traditions of the Indian Army .
