The Dodo has been extinct since the mid-to-late 17th century. However there are about 40 flightless species of birds living today for example - Kiwi, Penguin and Cassawary.

The ratites are a group of birds of Gondwana origin, that lack a 'keel' bone in their breast, to which the flight muscles would have otherwise been attached.

Even if they grew wings, they wouldn't be able to use them. Add to the above list, Rhea, Moa, Cassowary, Ostrich, and Emu.

Penguins did have wings, but evolved away from their flight use, but underwater, they use all the motions of flight.

In New Zealand there are several species of bird that are 'reluctant' fliers. These would include the Kakapo parrot, and the Pukeko, a hen-like bird. This is due to lack of predators, and thus evolution is responsible, for they can fly if chased.

(But the Kakapo has virtually lost all ability to fly.)

There are also numerous flightless birds within other groups of birds which are mostly made up of species which can fly. Rails, for example, include waterfowl such as moorhens, swamp hens and other small to medium birds which can fly but prefer not to. They cannot fly for any great distance, and within the rail family, there are numerous flightless birds, such as the Takahē and the weka of New Zealand, and the Inaccessible Island rail.

Other bird families have some members which cannot fly, even though most of the family can. The kakapo, which lives in New Zealand, is the world's only flightless parrot. The flightless steamer duck of the Falkland Islands is another bird which is an anomaly with its family. The Giant Coot of South America is unusual, as the adult cannot fly, but the young birds can.
