The Singer Building was the tallest in the world from the time of its completion in 1908, until 1909.

When it was first built (1931), the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world.

Then the World Trade Towers became the tallest buildings in the world in 1973, until they were surpassed by the Sears Tower (aka Willis Tower) in Chicago, Illinois, two years later. (There seems to be some confusion about this. One website I checked said that the Sears Tower was completed in 1973, and another said it was completed in 1975. Either way, the World Trade Towers were definitely the tallest buildings in the world for a little while. I have included links to both websites so you can decide for yourself).
