Yes, it looks like a string. In my Biology class we crushed up strawberries and took the DNA out, at first it looked like wet ball of strings but then when you take a piece of it and pull slowly, you can see it.

Well DNA form a single cell is visible to the naked eye because osmosis would still occur and and the stringy look of DNA would appear.
