Entire Mesoamerican civilizations (Aztec, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec) were exterminated by the Spanish conquistadors; their cities destroyed and used as building materials for the newly Spanish-founded cities. However, the most important among them was the city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Capital of the Aztec empire and home to 300,000 people at its peak, it was razed to the ground.
