Without the money to attend a university, young Robert E. Lee instead entered the United States Military Academy at West Point. There, he quickly rose in the ranks and graduated second in the class of 1829.

The only college Robert E. Lee attended was the US Military Academy at West Point, New York. Lee graduated second in the Class of 1829.
Lee was from an old and prominent Virginia family which had lost all its money due to his father's extremely poor financial management. Lee's father was "Light Horse Harry" Lee, a hero of the Revolution. He lost the ancient family home, where Robert was born, while Robert was still an infant. Light Horse Harry Lee died as a result of a beating by a Baltimore mob while Robert was still a very young boy. The mob had somehow gotten the idea that Light Horse Harry was pro-British at the outbreak of the War of 1812. With Robert's family impoverished and without a home, Robert and his siblings and mother were forced to depend on the kindness of relatives for housing and sustenance. Had Robert not won an appointment to attend West Point it is extremely doubtful that he could have afforded to attend any college.
When Robert attended West Point, though it was an excellent engineering school, and practically the only engineering school in the United States, the Military Academy did not award college degrees. In the 20th century the Military Academy retroactively awarded a college degree to every man who had ever graduated from the Academy, including Robert E. Lee.
