C3
A catalyst decreases the threshold energy value with which two particles must collide in order to react.
energy source
The way enzymes speed up chemical/biochemical reactions is the same way that catalysts work. They provide an alternate pathway for the reaction which has a LOWER activation energy. They don't actually decrease the activation energy of the pathway in question, but rather they provide a different pathway that has a lower energy of activation.
A catalyst, like enzymes.A catalyst is a substance that lowers the activation energy for a reaction and allows the process to speed up. The catalyst does not react with the substance so that it is 'used up'; in other words, it's reusable and comes out of the reaction unchanged.
A catalysts speed up the rate of reaction by providing an alternate pathway which has a lower energy of activation than the normal pathway.
activation of the complement via the alternative pathway
It does not rely on activation by antibodies.
C2a
Complement is part of the innate immune system (one you are born with). It consists of small protein molecules that circulate in the blood stream. Complement has three pathways, The classic pathway; The alternative pathway; and the lectin pathway. In the classical pathway, complement is activated by triggers such as the binding of an antigen to an antibody. In the alternative pathway, Complement is part of the natural immune system and complement assist in the opsonization, or the marking of an antigen to be destroyed by a phagocyte. This like the antigen has been marked with black marker so that a killer cell (phagocyte-cell eater) can find it to eat it. Finally the lectin pathway, which is similar to the classical pathway in terms of structure but this pathway starts with lectin or ficolin binding to sugars. After activation complement can trigger any number of events such as opsonization, chemotaxis, inflammation, and lysis (breaking) of cells.
By providing an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy.
A catalyst decreases the threshold energy value with which two particles must collide in order to react.
The classical complement pathway is a group of proteins that arrange the antibody response when you are sick. So basically they will spring into action when something is not right in your body.
