Acromegaly
The condition is called acromegaly. It is characterised by a gradual, marked enlargement and thickening of the bones of the face and jaw.
Marfan's syndrome is characterized by acromegaly (abnormal enlargement of the hands and feet after puberty)Acromegaly is the name of the condition resulting from too much growth hormone release in adulthood. It results in abnormal growth of the bones and pronounced soft tissue. This results in a fairly proto-typical appearance of a large, bulging forehead, prominent cheekbones, a pronounced mandibular line and abnormally large hands and feet, in addition to other abnormalities. The vast majority of people with acromegaly are found to have a growth hormone secreting pituitary adenoma.
pituitary glands
the pituitary gland comprising both anterior and posterior pituitarys produces 11 hormones termed as pituitary hormones.anterior pituitary produces: groeth hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH),long acting thyroid stimulator(LATS), exophthalmus producing substance(EPS),adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH), follicular stimulating hormone(FSH), leutinising hormone(LH), prolactin(lactogenic). posterior pituitary produces:anti-diuretic hormone(vasopressin), oxytocin. intermediate pituitary hormone:melanocyte stimulating hormone(MSH).
This test is useful in distinguishing individuals with excess ACTH production due to a pituitary adenoma from those with ectopic ACTH-producing tumors.
The pituitary gland sends signals to other glands and organs. Like the thyroid gland, adrenal glands, ovaries and testes. It directs them to produce certain hormones. A gland at the base of the brain. source :- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pituitary
