I don't know that anyone has that answer, due to lack of records. In 1995, it was estimated that private citizens in the US (alone) owned about 223 MILLION firearms- and the number has certainly increased since then. About 1 in every 4 adult Americans owns a firearm.

Actually, as of a Reuters report in 2007, the United States is considered as having the most armed citizens of anywhere in the world with 90 guns per 100 citizens. Keep in mind that since 2007, firearm sales have soared with the holiday season of 2011 being the biggest example when firearms sales broke a previous single-day record by more than 30 percent.
U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.
About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.
"There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said.

Most of the parties involved already had machine guns in their inventory prior to the outbreak of the First World War.

Well one of the reasons country people need guns is the eradication of pests that destroy crops. Another reason is some country people use guns as a means to support them selves and to erradicate the feral animal population. You can earn good money with a gun hunting pigs. And finally, but really not the most important is the fact that most, not all, most country people that used to have guns, used them responsibly to keep themselves occupied. We don't have cunema's or shopping centres to keep ourselves occupied. And yes, im from the country, born and bred, but have lived the past 10 years in major cities. And if you don't believe me about how boring it can get. Go way out the country and try and stay occupied for a week.
There are a number of countries that do not permit possession of guns by private citizens- Far too many to list. Most tend to be dictatorships that do not trust their own citizens. Other nations may restrict/ limit the guns that can be owned.
