Spain ceded Spanish Florida to the US under the Adam-Onis treaty of 1819. Spain received $5 million USD and a guarantee against US claims in New Spain (Mexico) which only lasted until the Texas War of Independence in 1836.
After the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson had led troops against the native tribes and fugitive slaves there, during the First Seminole War. In 1816, he destroyed a British-built fort, and captured the Spanish garrisons in the region by 1818. So the US was already in possession of much of Florida.
