The historical records indicate that Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, - maybe Santa Margarita. At the time of his birth Genoa was an independent state in what is modern Northwest Italy.

Recently arguments have been made that he was actually from Spain and not Italy. The factors cited in support of this are that:-

He wrote in Spanish and not Italian,

He was married to a wealthy Spanish woman ( if he had actually been a poor Italian sail maker that wouldn't have happened)

and the DNA of his son points to Spanish ethnicity.

These speculations are however still not generally accepted.
